Jonathan Gonzalez faces off against Gerardo Zapata on Friday, October 27 at Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua, Nicaragua. The contest features a Puerto Rican WBO light flyweight champion up against a contender, representing the country's host. The World Championship bout is scheduled for 12 rounds. The event airs live on ESPN+.
Gonzalez (27-3-1, 14 KOs) goes through the ropes for the first time in almost a year. In his previous bout last November on the Teraji vs. Kyoguchi card in Japan, the Bronx, New York native scored a unanimous decision against Shokichi Iwata. The 32-year-old southpaw makes the third defence of his belt.
Miami, Florida-based Zapata (14-1-1, 5 KOs) was in action in August when he fought Azael Villar to a split draw. Last December, Managua, a Nicaraguan native, collected his first career defeat via a controversial second-round disqualification against René Santiago. The 29-year-old makes his first attempt to become a world champion.
In the co-feature, Puerto Rico’s Rene Santiago (11-3, 8 KOs) defends his WBO Latino light flyweight belt against Kevin Vivas (7-0, 2 KOs) of Nicaragua. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds.
Among the Gonzalez vs. Zapata undercard bouts, Eveling Junieth Ortega (5-4, 2 KOs) of Nicaragua and Silvia Duran (3-1, 2 KOs) of Costa Rica meet in a six-round bout at women’s light flyweight. As well, Harvin Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) and Israel Lopez (11-3-1, 8 KOs) go toe-to-toe in an eight-round all-Nicaraguan bout at welterweight. Plus, Gerardo Sanchez (8-1, 5 KOs) of Honduras and Eduardo Ajito (11-0, 5 KOs) of Peru clash in an eight-round bout at light flyweight.
Among the non-televised prelims, Alex Vallecillo (4-0, 4 KOs) meets Christian Jimenez (5-0, 4 KOs) in a six-round all-Nicaraguan bout at super bantamweight. In addition, Michael Carmona (3-0, 1 KO) meets fellow Nicaraguan Miguel Tercero (0-2) in a four-round bout at light flyweight.
